EU Referendum Campaign Press Release
On behalf of the people of Britain The EU Referendum Campaign renews its demand for a referendum on the EU.
Jon Gaunt, spokesman for the EU Referendum Campaign said: ‘Cameron’s boast that he has won a victory by getting EU leaders to promise that they will never again use Article 122 to push Britain into funding the rescue of another failing EU state is at best a pyrrhic victory and at worst a downright lie.
‘Cameron is either stupid or naïve if he believes that this promise (the political equivalent of the football chairman’s vote of confidence in a failing manager) is worth the paper it’s written on.
‘The only way to safeguard Britain’s interest is allow the British people to have a vote on the EU as he promised us in opposition.
‘He should take a look at the Tories own website which still has a page up today promising and demanding a referendum on the EU on it. http://www.conservatives.com/News/News_stories/2009/04/Join_our_campaign_for_an_EU_referendum.aspx
‘On the page Cameron says, “First he was against the Constitution, then he was for it; one day he promised a referendum, the next he backtracked. While he has chopped and changed, our position has remained exactly the same. We are the only major party to have consistently said that it is up to the British people to decide on our future in Europe.”
‘Cameron was talking about Brown on April 27th 2009 but of course the words could be used to describe himself now in December 2010.’
