By-election gains for Tories and Labour




The Tories and Labour both gained in the latest council by-elections, during a night of close finishes.


Conservative Ian Brown took a Liberal Democrat seat at Salthill, Ribble Valley Borough, Lancashire, by four votes.

However, there was a net swing to the Lib Dems based on the average vote shares in May.
Stuart Hutchinson made a second gain for the Tories, easily winning from independent at West Wight, Isle of Wight Council.

By just one vote Labour's Dana-Louise Davies triumphed at Ruabon, Wrexham County Borough, North Wales, on a big shift from Plaid Cymru.

There was relief for the Lib Dems when they held off a Labour challenge at Poulton North, Warrington Borough, in its third contest this year.

Lib Dem councillor Colin Oliver lost there in May's main polls but successfully held another seat in the ward in a July by-election.

His death caused the latest poll.

The SNP defended a seat at Hillhead, Glasgow, with a jump in its vote share of nearly 12% since 2007.

Despite the eurozone's woes there was little sign of a surge by Ukip which fought four of the five contests declared so far.

That seemed to be quite a busy week on its own but then it was back from Strasbourg to the constituency and sort out matters with the staff in the office and ensure that the promotion of the petition at CLICK HERE which is already standing at just under 7,000 signatures before the campaign has even begun.

Let us not forget that it was the petition that nikki Sinclaire devised, launched, promoted and funded that received Cross Party support and over 125,000 signatures which obtained a full debate in The House of Commons on a referendum on In/Out of The EU which led to a substantially larger revolt by honest MPs representing their electorate against the ambitions and bullying of the whips.

Then early on Friday it was off to Brize Norton (I presume) to fly to Afghanistan to see for herself what I consider to be the utter folly of Britain's involvement there and the clear fact that our politicians haven't a clue what they are doing or what is happening in the region or how to resolve the idiocy of our engagement.

Clearly the military leaders are so utterly self serving they have taken absolutely no steps that might endanger their careers to protect their men.


That the official visit is to the province of Helmand speaks volumes as we have failed spectacularly to achieve anything of value relative to even this small area out of all of Afghanistan where all that has been achieved is a dangerous debacle in a 500 year inter tribal civil war, currently exploited in the ongoing animosity between Pakistan & India.


The presence of politicianms may well give support to our troops on the ground but they are unlikely to see anything of consequence beyond that which upholds the idiotic posturings of British & American politicians and the self serving interests of the Military leaders in persuit of their pensions and subsequent contracts with defence suppliers as consultants and directors!


No doubt having returned Nikki Sinclaire will have made her own deductions as with her recent visit to Palestine!

PRESS RELEASE




West Midlands MEP Nikki Sinclaire has just returned from a fact-finding visit to British Forces at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan.

As part of her role in the RAF Parliamentary Scheme, Nikki was briefed on Britain's role within The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) by senior officers General Bucknell and Brigadier Patrick Sanders. She also took the opportunity to discuss conditions and operations with soldiers from across the West Midlands.

Discussions included ISAF's role in reducing the capability and will of the insurgency, its support role in the growth in capacity and capability of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and its long-term objective of facilitating improvements in governance and socio-economic development in order to provide a secure environment for sustainable stability and growth.

Nikki observed training exercises including the location and deactivation of mines and was shown a wide range of military hardware. The quality of our soldiers’ ‘kit’ has improved considerably in recent years with British soldiers now amongst the best equipped. Nikki also met with local Afghans who work in the Camp.

Despite casualties in recent days there has been a marked overall improvement, with insurgent attacks reduced by 24% in the past year.  The greatest difference lies in the social changes. Healthcare access for the local population has increased from 8% under the Taliban to 60% today. Infant mortality has been reduced by 20%. Access to education has substantially increased and, of course, now includes girls to whom the Taliban denied instruction. There are 13,000 more schools, 170,000 more teachers and 7.3 million more students.

Nikki said "These social changes have helped the Afghans to reject the Taliban who are still responsible for as many as 90% of civilian casualties. British forces within ISAF are creating trust, thus persuading locals that there is an alternative to the Taliban"

The 9,500 British forces in Afghanistan are soon to be reduced by 500 with a view to the bulk of forces leaving by the end of 2014.  Officers and soldiers alike are concerned that the Afghan infrastructure needs to be consolidated and that 'a rush for the exit' may undo a decade of hard work. Further creation and fostering of local governance are a priority. Investment is needed so that troop withdrawal will not be followed by recession.

Nikki said "Our servicemen and women are rightly proud of their achievements, but I understand their anxiety that those achievements, paid for 'in blood and treasure', should be wasted rather than consolidated.  There is a widespread feeling that, despite public support for the Armed forces, their role and their quiet but hugely significant contributions are not being fully understood by the British public."

Servicemen and women took the opportunity to voice their frustration at the lack of co-operation they and their families receive from public authorities and public services. Schooling for their children, dental and doctor registration are also problems. It was also pointed out that local authorities make no provision in respect of Council Tax when service personnel are on active duty. A tour of duty lasts approximately six months. Quality of housing for their families is also an issue. Nikki will be taking up these cases with local councils to make sure the ‘Military Covenant’ is implemented without delay.

Reflecting on her visit Nikki said "I feel privileged to have been given this opportunity. My visit has given me a precious firsthand insight into the situation. Nothing prepares you for flying into Afghanistan on a C17 loaded with cargo, in pitch black wearing body armour - it dawns on you how perilous the situation can be and the debt that we owe to our brave men and women."

Looking to the future, Nikki commented "We all want our forces home quickly, but we must appreciate their role, their achievements and their professional pride. They are making a difference. They want it to be a lasting difference.”

Persona;;y I do not agree with Nikki Sinclaire's apparent regurgitation of official propaganda in the statement:
'.....There is a widespread feeling that, despite public support for the Armed forces, their role and their quiet but hugely significant contributions are not being fully understood by the British public'.
I believe there is a clarity of thought amongst informed people that supports the troops but repudiates the self serving position of senior military in failing to speak out in support of their men and doing absolutely nothing of value beyond exacerbating an already unethical and idiotic position where it is clear the involvement of these United Kingdoms is morally reprehensible and a study in political ignorance on the part of British politicians - what can only be described when the history is written as being as catastrophic as our obscene folly in involvement and our abject failure in Iraq!

I contend that UKIP Leadership its parasites and sycophants are self serving, corrupt, inept, unprincipled, unethical and unfit for purpose.

Sadly the evidence is all too readily available and the facts speak for themselves - just look at the array of low lifes squabbling and defaming like fools in bedlam!

You may want to keep up to date with the ethical resignation of Steve Allison from UKIP elected Office and his appointment to Party Office due to his split loyalty one wonders if Peter Reeve will act ethically or hide behind the spin that has been put out that implies work he has been doing for David Bannerman was before he returned to The Tories!

Were this the case one is forced to ask what motivated Gollom to mount such an attack and have such a dispute when he has for many years tried to ride to horses for two masters and acted in an unprincipled manner and for money also.

A measure of the ineptitude of UKIP leadership and its parasites is thet in 20 years they have abjectly failed to make so much as a dent on UK politics with less than 20 elected members holding places in the 19,500 or so domestic governance structure!

Their abject failure to build an organisational structure - provide a vision, have ANY strategy or tactics - put forward absolutely no defence to the EU Constitution which was enacted and imposed as The Lisbon Treaty.

Nor have UKIP provided so much as an exit and survival plan for these United Kingdoms.

Maybe it is just post-operative blues, but I'm struggling to get back into the frame, with the news agenda lacking any apparent coherence. We are seeing much the same EU stories as before, nothing has been resolved and the UK political position is no further forward.

I am grateful, therefore, to Witterings from Witney, for picking up a comment of mine on the Norwegian situation, brought up by Cameron in his Lord Mayor's Banquet speech, and supposedly rebutted by Farage.

This affords me an opportunity to display some irritation (hey! I'm entitled occasionally) at the limitations of our "own" side. For, while one expects nothing of Cameron – or any of the other Tories who seem impervious to knowledge on the EU – one would hope that our own would take the time to find out something of the organisation of which they speak.

In the case of Norway, this is quite important, as the situation is deemed to be a weak point in the eurosceptic armoury. Even outside the EU, it is held, Britain would have to adopt common trading law, as does Norway but, unlike currently, we would lose any influence in its framing, having thus to adopt in the manner of Norway, laws sent to us by fax from Brussels - the so-called "fax law" option.

Bizarrely, Farage concedes this point, although it is not true and can easily be demolished. We have rehearsed it many times and wrote a definitive piece in May 2008, pointing out the actual situation. Most of these laws are not agreed by the EU at all, but by intergovernmental bodies such as UNECE, of which Norway (and the UK) is a member. The legislation is then processed by the EU commission acting in more of a bureaucratic than legislative role.

In other pieces, such as this, I have pointed out that there are dozens of UNECE-type bodies, which would also continue in place even if we left the EU, and through which we would continue to agree international standards, to which EU members would also be bound.  Outside the EU, therefore, we would have just as much influence over single market-type law, adopted by EU members.

The down-side, of course, is that leaving the EU would actually provide less relief from petty regulation than we might imagine, although we could disapply much of it from the domestic market.

This though, is core knowledge which should be shaping the debate. But, tediously, one of the leading players continues to do nothing other than display his ignorance, having never troubled to expand his knowledge-set beyond the basic minimum.

And this is why UKIP risks being left at the starting gate, should we come to a real debate about the mechanics of leaving the EU. The Party has no more to offer than the Tories, and that is perilously little.

One sees, for instance, the halt and the lame in that direction, talking blithely about which powers to repatriate and how they would go about reclaiming them, demonstrating absolutely no practical understanding of the complexities involved.

Strangely, of all the policies at present managed by the EU, the first we should claw back is the research programme. This is quite simply because, to repatriate powers, we must replace policies – otherwise there is no point in so doing. And those that are aware of the processes will be aware that a huge amount of policy development (a complex, expensive and time-consuming process) is funded under the research programme.

Thus, is order to reclaim powers, we must develop new policies and, to do that, we must reclaim the policy-making tools.

And so do we need coherence in the debate. Leaving the EU is eminently practicable, possible and necessary, but only if we are able to offer a credible and realistic pathway. To its shame, the eurosceptic community has yet to deliver on this and, when we hear the likes of Farage parade his ignorance, we wonder how longer we are going to have to wait.

I note that Steve Allison has effectively been dumped by UKIP for seemingly having stood up to the corruption within UKIP leadership and he has on numerous occasions stated that his election to UKIP NEC and appointment as an Officer of the party was largely irrelevant and carried no authority.

He would seem to have majorly fallen out with the corrupt leadership of UKIP for having organised a depate and vote on PEPP which the leadership resoundingly lost and unlike previous Officers such as Douglas Denny he was not it seems willing to cheat and rig the election.

I noted on the 13-Nov-2011 moves were afoot in Hartlepool to address the monkey in the pack by seeking to give a voice to local politics and local issues and by acting as a group the Independent Councillors and those of minority parties such as UKIP, BNP, Greens and the like have formed a 'Cross Party Political Party called:
"Hartlepool Independents - Putting Hartlepool First"

15-Nov-2011 although UKIP have made no official announcement and there is no comment on their web site where in fact they still list Steve Allison as Party Vice Chairman with an elected office lasting until 2013 it has been made clear publicly that he is no longer authorised to communicate with members on the heavily controlled UKIP Forum!

It is worth noting the apparent collapse of UKIP with we gather less than 5,000 votes cast in their recent NEC elections, which would indicate on past form a real membership of around 8,000 with (any) all others being little more than titular!
