Piers Rolf Garfield Merchant
(born: 2 January 1951) & (died: 21 September 2009)
aged 58


Piers Merchant was a politician in the United Kingdom. 
He was Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Beckenham, but resigned in October 1997.

Before he became an MP he was a journalist and marketing officer. 

Merchant was educated at Nottingham High School and the University of Durham where he was Senior Man of University College's JCR. He was first elected to the House of Commons at the 1983 general election, for the Newcastle Central constituency, he lost the seat at the June 1987 general election. He stood for Beckenham at the 1992 general election and won.

MPs cannot technically resign; instead he took the offices of Steward of the Manor of Northstead, which automatically led to his disqualification.

In the 2004 European Parliament election, Merchant stood for the UK Independence Party in the North East England constituency, at the top of their party list. He was not elected.

Piers Merchant worked for some years, in various capacities, for UKIP, having been at one time political advisor to Roger Knapman the UKIP leader during their sucessful 2004 election and also for a short time acted as UKIP General Secretary until a suitable individual could be found full time.

In 2005, Merchant relocated to Great Torrington in North Devon. Merchant is also a member of Mensa.

It is with regret that I inform you that in early July 2009 Piers was diagnosed as having advanced multi site metastatic cancer, the prognosis being bleak. His wife Helen supported by their two children is with him at this time. (07-Jul-09)

It is with regret that I inform you that on 21-Sep-2009 Piers Merchant died after a short terminal illness. The cause of death was multi site metastatic cancer.

Piers Merchant leaves his wife Helen and their daughter and teenage son. Piers had faced his illness with courage, supported by his family, and leaves many friends and colleagues, Piers' brother will find it particularly hard as their Mother had died only a matter of a few months ago after a brief terminal illness, though at a much more acceptable age.

The EUroRealist movement has lost an indefatiguable campaigner and a well informed advocate, whose contribution in UKIP has been immense. He will be remembered with affection by his many colleagues in UKIP and before that from his days as a Conservative MP and before.

My personal condolences to their children Alethea and Rolf and to his widow Helen Merchant (nee Burrlock) whom he married in 1977. Helen loyally stood by Piers throughout the visicitudes of a colourfull and productive life, whilst maintaining a high powered career in her own right.

Much of Piers' life was was spent in service to British liberty and democracy, though he will be remembered by many for his colourfull private life - a life too soon lost!

Not stopping there Nikki Sinclaire, at her own expense, having purchased 2 advertising vehicles to take her campaign Nationwide also commissioned a YouGov Poll - The results showed:

52% of all adults poled would vote to leave The EU.

Tory MPs demand referendum on Europe

David Cameron must call a referendum on Europe or face a rebellion from his own party and a backlash from voters, a leading back-bench Tory warns today.

Mark Pritchard, the secretary of the 1922 committee of Conservative MPs, is the most senior Tory yet to demand a vote on Britain’s membership of the European Union following the eurozone crisis.
Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Mr Pritchard says that the EU has become an “occupying force” which is eroding British sovereignty and that the “unquestioning support” of backbenchers is no longer guaranteed.
He says the Government should hold a referendum next year on whether Britain should have a “trade only” relationship with the EU, rather than the political union which has evolved “by stealth”.
He warns that the Conservatives will see constituents “kick back” if taxpayers are forced to foot the bill for the failure of “unreformed and lazy” eurozone countries to introduce fully-fledged austerity measures.
Mr Pritchard is a leading figure in a group of 120 Conservative MPs who are pushing the Prime Minister to set out a “clear plan” for pulling back from Europe.

George Eustice, a backbench MP and former close aide to Mr Cameron, is also demanding a “new relationship” with the EU.
William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, recently threw his weight behind the Eurosceptics by saying that Britain might prosper by loosening its ties with Europe.
Mr Pritchard’s intervention will further increase tensions within the Coalition.
Danny Alexander, the Liberal Democrat Treasury minister, yesterday attacked Eurosceptics as being “enemies of growth”.
In a clear warning to Mr Cameron, Mr Pritchard says Tory MPs have become tired of tolerating the “Europhile views” of Liberal Democrat ministers.
He writes: “Conservative backbenches can no longer be taken for granted.
''Conservative MPs will not continue to write blank cheques for workers in Lisbon while people in London and Leicester are joining the dole queue.
“For many Britons, the EU has already become a kind of occupying force, setting unfamiliar rules, demanding levies, curbing freedoms, subverting our culture, and imposing alien taxes.
''In less than four decades, and without a single shot being fired, Britain has become enslaved to Europe — servitude that intrudes and impinges on millions of British lives every day.
“Brussels has become a burdensome yoke, disfiguring Britain’s independence and diluting her sovereignty.”
Mr Pritchard accuses Mr Cameron of failing to honour a “guarantee” to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.
He says: “The Coalition should agree to a referendum on Europe asking whether Britain should be part of a political union or of the trade-only relationship we thought we had signed up to.
“This is a moderate proposition that would attract voters from across the political spectrum, unite many on the Left and Right within Parliament and galvanise the support of most in the media.” Mr Cameron recently ruled out a referendum on the EU asking whether Britain should opt in or out. Mr Pritchard believes his “stepping stone” approach will provide a compromise.
He says that if Britain votes for a trade-only relationship with the EU, there should then be a referendum about membership on the date of the next general election.
Mr Pritchard writes: “The British have grown weary of Europe. The Coalition government should end decades of political appeasement by successive governments and champion freedom and democracy for Britain – and agree a referendum.”
Mr Cameron and George Osborne, the Chancellor, know that the unfolding crisis in the eurozone will give the Conservative party’s Eurosceptic MPs a chance to argue more powerfully for a realignment of Britain’s position in the EU.
The 2010 intake of new Tory MPs is regarded as the most Eurosceptic in a generation and large numbers of government ministers remain privately anti-Brussels.
Some hope that Mr Osborne, the Conservative election strategist, will advance a series of policies that can address the concerns of his party before the next election and in the process tap into the worries of voters.
But Mr Osborne’s Liberal Democrat deputy at the Treasury, Mr Alexander, yesterday criticised those who want to take Britain away from the EU.
The Chief Secretary to the Treasury, told Liberal Democrat activists: “Sadly, Eurosceptics on left and right fail
to understand Winston Churchill’s
central insight that sharing sovereignty strengthens influence and isolation weakens us.
“Scottish Nationalists make the same mistake. We will never let the anti-Europeans or nationalists frustrate our national interest. They are enemies of growth.”
Backbencher Mr Eustice is spearheading the challenge to the Prime Minister over the EU.
Eurosceptic Tory backbenchers want the party leadership to act more decisively on Europe and return some powers to Westminster.

UKIP lion skin auction 'stupid and insensitive'


The planned auction of a lion skin and head by the UK Independence Party (UKIP) has been condemned by conservationists.

The item is being auctioned at UKIP's annual gala dinner in Eastbourne.

Chris MacSween, of Kent-based charity Lion Aid, said it was "stupid and insensitive" and UKIP was effectively "condoning lion trophy hunting".

UKIP said it was donated by a party member and it did not support "modern day hunting of lions for their skins".

The party's website listing of the item says: "Antique skin, with head, of a lioness shot in Zimbabwe. (Reserve £200) Donated by Geoffrey Clark (who did not shoot it!)."

A party spokesman said: "We appreciate that such an item is not to everybody's taste.

"The lion head and skin is an antique which was donated to the party by a member. The member in question originally received it as a gift following a stint working in Zimbabwe.

"It is approximately 45 to 50 years old and came into the country long before modern day legislation was in place to halt such imports."

Ms MacSween expressed "shock and horror" and said the auction was "in the worst possible taste".

"UKIP has not only accepted this trophy in as an auction item, but now they want to earn money from it," she said.

"You don't sell trophies onwards. Secondly, anyone who bids for that trophy is also exhibiting the worst possible taste here. Thirdly, buying trophies stimulates the market for more lions to be hunted."
'Trophy hunting'
She called for UKIP to remove the item from the auction list and for it to be confiscated and a full investigation to be conducted as to how it came into the UK.

"Maybe it did come in through a legal means, but we are working so very, very hard with a lot of politicians both in Europe and in the UK, cross party, to try and get trophy hunting stopped," she said.

Will Travers, chief executive of the Born Free Foundation, also condemned the auction.

"Born Free is not interested in politics. It is interested in animal conservation and animal welfare," he said.

"Selling animal trophies of any kind - whether it be lion, rhino or tiger - draws attention to the trade and may stimulate unscrupulous dealings.

"Therefore we would urge all parties, from whatever persuasion, to abandon ideas of selling wildlife for political gain."

The auction is due to take place on Friday evening during the gala, which is part of the party's annual conference.

Having been in The Durrell Research Facility in Jersey at the weekend I was interested to note that WWF have spent a part of their budget collected in from people for the protection of endangered species yet they have spent the money on sponsoring/supporting the killing of elephants.

The foolish part of UKIP leadership action was in fact describing the ornamental trophy pelt as antique!!! which it clearly is not.

Lions are NOT a protected species as such though they are protected in some areas - that an animal was shot and killed is in itself not a problem as it may well have been an elderly animal predating domestic cattle on the outskirts of Bulawayo for all we know and the knee jerk reactive comments of the imbecilic are what so rightly brings the entire so called 'Green' movement into disrepute.

It may surprise some that lions are prolific breeders and as with an orchid on a bowling green nothing more than a damned nuissance in the wrong place!

Also it is worth noting that lions are not immortal and 100s live in captivity and may well be quite legitimately stuffed or form trophy pelts when they die.

There is also an entire industry which has been exposed by Daniel Foggo over the years which organises trophy shooting for inadequates with money - much of this is the shooting of lions as they are abundant and they are caged in large open pens and wealthy inadequates pay to follow them for a couple of hundred yards and then shoot them in the secure knowledge that there is a professional gun either side of them to kill the beast if it turns and the client is at danger!

It happens that this week there was just such a story in The Sunday Times see: CLICK HERE.

This beast was shot in Zambia for money with a hired gun, and it was most probably a penned animal and may well have been circus stock bred in captivity, now surplus to requirement. The industry does at least feed numerous africans who may well starve without the work!

There are many consequential issues that UKIP and particularly its leadership can legitimately be castigated for but this example of their stupidity is hardly of any consequence and surely shows nothing more than the utter incompetence of their PR, Press Office and judgement YET AGAIN.

More harm has come from UKIP's Press Office and the garbage they have employed there than has EVER been noted by their achievements!

Anarchist pop band Chumbawamba expressed horror after their anthem to resilience, Tubthumping (I Get Knocked Down), was used at the Ukip conference in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

Band member Dunstan Bruce said his reaction to the news was one of:
"total and absolute outrage and horror".
He suggested that the party must have been unaware of the band's background.  
"This song being used by Ukip is so wrong. I am absolutely appalled that this grubby little organisation are stealing our song to use for their own ends. It's beyond the pale and if they use it again we will consider legal action."

For more details of the conference see last year - much the same with the same 400 presented as near double that rattling around in an oversized facility with a platform to promote the EU's aims with irrelevant foreign politicians and the normal little claque of Farage sychophants clamouring for attention to get a hand up onto the Gravy Train.

Sad really when you realise whist the whole of UKIP has been so badly led they have done nothing whilst those who really seek to Leave-The-EU have gone out and helped Nikki Sinclaire as an independent to get over 100,000 signatures and driven her campaign vehicles and ad vans 1,000s of miles working on a daily basis towards the Leave-The-EU cause - whilst the Judas Goats and Plastic EUroSceptics were merely helping The EU and routing around in the trough for more money for themselves!

It seems that UKIP has so lost the plot that their only means of defending themselves is not to show their achievements but to abuse and lie about anyone who tells the truth about them or does not endlessly worship their ineptitude.

After the embarrassing debacle of the EFD Conference and the day allocated to UKIP with its more of the same soundbites, same grouping of about 400 sold as many more and as ever implausible speeches - right down to the elderly failed Tory wheeled out on stage as the only apparent turn they could muster.

Save of course the efforts to wheel Jon Gaunt out as their Judas Goat, having failed totally to achieve anything of substance - in fact having failed to even keep his organisation up to date or with an executive staff anymore! - I'll grant you it had been professionally & deliberately sabotaged by those Plastic EUroSceptics who having been denied the right to politically control and be in political command and make political capital for themselves set out themselves as Judas Goats to hijack the Peoples' Pledge and turn it once again into The Politicians' vehicle!

They lack even the gonnadic ability to admit that The Pledge has failed be it the original Pledge which Jon Gaunt has now jumped on the band waggon of seemingly a career move, possibly even hoping for a job with UKIP as with poor old Neil Hamilton!!!

Then of course there is that other failure the Marc Glendenning, Bob Crow, Labour inspired Judas Goat that has been set up as The Politicians' vehicle with Dan Hannon and the like who seek to embarrass David Cameron.

That too has failed and crano rectally retentive as these self serving fools are preening in the mirror can they not understand they are making fools of themselves as severall weeks ago it was announced that The Petition Campaign for an in/out Referendum had reached the 100,000 target required and some whilst the Judas Goats were squabbling and trying to gain the upper hand with less than 50,000 signatures - Whilst they squabbled like Politicians the real work had been done by The Independent Nikki Sinclaire MEP with a small group of cross party MPs and MEPs THEY DELIVERED whilst the Plastic EUroSceptics acted like Judas Goats to sabotage the Petition concept THEY FAILED.

On Thursday last Nikki Sinclaire MEP and her supporters DELIVERED 100,000+ Signatures to Drowning Street and officially to The Rump Parliament at Westminster.

I note with interest Team Farage have systematically shot themselves in the foot - It was their well publicised intent to bring Nikki Sinclaire back into the fold having found themselves at risk of a staggeringly costly High Court action with the huge damages potential to follow!
As I predicted - an apology was issued to ameliorate the guilty verdict where the Courts found against Nigel Farage, Godfrey Bloom and UKIP in favour of Nikki Sinclaire.

I predicted huge efforts would be made to try to capitalise on her achievements since she disassociated herself from the extremist and vile EFD Group and the Farage Party Faction's persuit of personal revenue!

I predicted all would be overtures UNTIL the EFD Conference was over (YES EFD as UKIP was willing to jump through any EU hoop and give the EU dream [Nightmare] credibility in return for the EU funding their conference!) - I then said the pretend deal would start to unravel.

It may amuse watchers of the sordid dishonesty of UKIP Leadership claque that they made much of TRYING to portray Nikki Sinclaire as unfit by virtue of a technical bankruptcy which Farage's gutter rat had routed out in the sewers of his life - for which he, Mark Croucher, tried to claim glory when it was years earlier that I had provided the details and the fact that it was a complete irrelevancy pre dating her appointment to any office.

Strangely it has been made clear and deliberately leaked that UKIP will, if Nikki Sinclaire proceeds to The High Court, claim they suspended her right to represent UKIP BECAUSE she was once years ago a bankrupt.

Intertestingly this just won't wash and digs the hole even deeper for UKIP!

Firstly it was public domain, irrelevant and common knowledge that she had been bankrupt when Nigel Farage as leader selected her as a candidate in an MEP constituency. Yet astonishingly the febrile excuse for his having lied about her and defamed her to get rid of her as a UKIP MEP when he forced his puppet Malcolm Pearson to write that scurrilous letter and outright lie was that she had to be removed as she had once in the past been a bankrupt and that she was discharged as a bankrupt years ago was irrelevant.

This was used as the excuse for firing her yet not firing Mike Nattrass or Trevor Colman who had also had sufficient integrity to leave the racist, extremist and violent EFD Group, yet not firing them!

So I guess Neil Hamilton will mnever be able to be an MEP or on The NEC and of course he will have to be fired from his position as the new Muppet of Wiltshire or whatever Farage calls his Branch/Regional appointed Chairmen who have never been elected and get parachuted in for his gain!

Although Neil Hamilton has been a member of UKIP for 6 years and is a Bankrupt Farage has a rule for people he can make money out of and another rule for people who challenge his corruption I guess!

Well it is The Farage Fund Raising Party I guess - but I guess that will cost UKIP members 10s of £1,000 when it comes to the High Court but why should Farage worry when UKIP received £8,500 compensation for an error in The Sunday Times that of course will have gone to Farage and when the Bills come in for his many lost Court cases those Bills go to the members!

What a charlatan Nigel Farage is but as I have always said Farage is UKIP's greatest liability with his salaried sex life, drunken thieves on the staff, consorting with prostitutes and well known drunken reveries but he is also their only assett as he has made sure by surrounding himself with the weak, the venal and the corrupt, liars, cheats and bullies.

Not one of the leadership team is other than the scum that has risen in the septic tank Farage has built.

He is however quite a good performer all be it a uselesas leader as this video shows:
